Heartland Frontier Content Update - v0.2.1


A class-based 4x strategy game where you take control of a feudal fiefdom and resist foreign invaders to build a sovereign nation.  The heartland is the last true untamed frontier on the continent, a depopulated realm trapped between 4 great powers.



The theme of this devlog is user experience and how I can improve user interaction with the game. Moving towards 0.3, there are several HCI areas I see as requirements before reaching that stage.

There are dozens of abilities in the game and now they have tooltips which describe what abilities do, who they target, their cost and more. This update is important because I think it will make it easier for you to understand the effects of performing actions.



You can see where tooltips will appear in the above screenshot. Each ability has a unique tooltip that describes what the action does as well as any associated variables that you should know about, such as resource cost or what targets the ability effects.


Ability Name: Describes the action.

Ability Target: The object this ability effects e.g. tiles, cities, characters...

Ability Description: Provides context to the action.

Ability Cost: What resources are required to perform this action.

Ability Duration: The time variable associated with performing this action.


Tooltips are important because they mark a shift from developing new mechanics towards optimising what already exists. I will continue to think about user experience moving towards 0.3 and I do have some significant content updates in the pipeline.
