Welsh Kings

Over the past couple of months we have seen a growing cohort of returning players to Saxon Kings. Because of this, I have decided to kick off the new year by adding additional content that supports those who come back to play more!

Wales has been added as a fully-playable part of the campaign map. Wales consists of 5 new territories. The river Severn has also been added.

Wales and its associated territories.

The 5 new territories are:

  • Glamorgan
  • Dyfed
  • Gwynedd
  • Clwyd
  • Powys

Along with these new lands, we have new factions! You can start the game playing in Wales as either Gwynedd in the north and Dyfed in the south.

The Kingdom of Gwynedd played a major role in Welsh history from the  5th through to the 13th century. The kingdom was eventually conquered by the English in the late 1200s.

During good times, it was a premier power that dominated Wales. After setbacks, it always managed to stabilise and recover over the centuries.

The Kingdom of Dyfed, located in the south of Wales was a serious player from the point at which the Romans left British shores in the 5th century.

Dyfed represents a typical Welsh power, dominating its neighbours. However the area also had many monasteries and was a hotbed for scholastic learning

Another change is that the map graphics have been reworked.

The old map with curved territories.

The territories now have less curves and more sharp edges. The map in general is darker as well - in grayscale it doesn't look like much, but once you add faction colours on top, your territories blend together more.

The new map with sharp territories.

The map boundaries have expanded. You can now see Scotland and Ireland!

A zoomed out view of the game world.

With Scotland and Ireland added to the game map, although not playable at the moment, it tells you that soon you will be able to play as a number of Scottish and Irish kingdoms.
